Eligibility

The AIMEP is open to Muslim emerging leaders, community activists and change makers from Indonesia and Australia between the ages of 23 and 40.

To be eligible for the AIMEP, all delegates should be making some form of contribution to their community.

Past AIMEP delegates have included community organisers, educators, activists, lawyers, artists, public servants, journalists, interfaith activists, peace-builders, entrepreneurs, and many others. Our communities are diverse and we aim to reflect that diversity.

All AIMEP meetings will be conducted in English. Therefore, Indonesian applicants should have a minimum TOEFL of 500, IELTS of 5.5 or other proof of their English ability.

Yes, you can be a citizen or a permanent resident of either Australia or Indonesia at the time of applying.

Applicants within the 23-40 year age range will have first priority. If there aren’t enough suitable applicants from a particular country or gender group within that country, applicants slightly outside the age range may be considered.

To determine eligibility, we look at your age on the day that the online component of the program begins. See the Key Dates for more information.

As long as you are an Australian or Indonesian citizen or permanent resident who usually lives in one of those countries, you can apply for the AIMEP. However, you should be able to show that you are actively involved in the Muslim community in your home country.

For people from ASEAN countries other than Indonesia, please check out the Australia ASEAN Muslim Exchange Program (AAMEP)

Yes – for over 20 years, the AIMEP has brought people from Indonesia and Australia together from diverse backgrounds, regions, communities, and professions. We aim to build bridges and create a vibrant alumni community that reflects the diversity of our Muslim communities.

To do this, we want to include a broad range of delegates with different experiences and knowledge. Even if you feel like your experience is a little different to our usual delegate, we still encourage you to apply. You might be exactly who we’re looking for!

If you’re not sure, you’re always welcome to get in touch – our team will be very happy to answer any questions you might have.

Application Process

Your application can be in English or Bahasa Indonesia, whichever is most comfortable for you.

While AI can be a useful tool in generating ideas and possibilities, it also tends to be generic and formulaic. We recommend that you avoid using it to write your actual application, especially your letter of motivation.

This is because the selection panel will be looking for evidence of your unique voice and genuine thoughts and reflections about the AIMEP, your own experiences, and your community work. AI cannot provide this – only you can.

With this in mind, we strongly encourage candidates to write their motivation letter using their own words and expressions.

Yes – please include 2-3 reference letters.

There is no specific format or template that needs to be followed.

All reference letters should be from someone who knows you well and can describe your contribution to your community. Please note, there is no particular format required for reference letters. The most important factor is that they describe your contributions and suitability as an AIMEP candidate.

Reference letters can be written in English or Bahasa Indonesia.

We understand that referees can be busy – if it is not possible to obtain a reference letter before the deadline, then please:

  • list your referee’s name on the application form,
  • mention in your application that your reference letters are coming late, and
  • ensure references are submitted via email to info@mosaicconnections.com.au no later than 5 calendar days after applications close.

As the AIMEP will take place mainly in English, applicants from Indonesia are requested to demonstrate their English competency by attaching a recent testing certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS. All certificates (including ITP, prediction or university TOEFL) issued after 1 January 2020 will be considered by the panel in accordance with their status. The minimum requirement for English ability is as follows:

TOEFL PBT or ITP: 500

TOEFL iBT: 61

IELTS: 5.5

Duolingo Full Test or Free Test: 95

TOEIC: 600

If you do not have the above certificates, you can submit any other evidence that you have, including evidence of working or studying in an English-speaking context, or online tests such as Duolingo Free Test.

If you are unsure about your English certificate or would like us to consider alternative evidence of your English ability, please contact us directly to discuss further.

Yes, all applicants will be contacted by email about the result, whether successful or unsuccessful.

If you have not been contacted, we request that you wait until one week after the date for application outcome notifications found in the Key Dates before getting in touch. This is because it can take some time to contact all candidates. Thank you!

In 2025, we anticipate that 19 delegates will be accepted. This includes 12 Indonesians and 7 Australians.
